A year ago, five men turned up on a Sunday morning. That is barely half of an Inter-Hall rugby team.

Then, Hall 4 could not field a team and had to concede its participation.

The ruggers of Hall 4, led by captain Praga, stood steadfast in their passion and a year on, we have a full team.

Last Sunday, the team took on the equally brave men from other halls as all sixteen vied for quarterfinal places in Inter-Hall rugby 2009. After a long day, the hall unfortunately finished third and could not advance. It was an outstanding effort from players mostly without past experience in the game.

Hall 4 was grouped together with seed Hall 11, Hall 15 and Hall 5. Praga recognized that we could not complain about our grouping, especially since we avoided Halls 1 and 6, the two powerhouses that were not seeded this season.

It was apt and ironic that two young neighbours began their tournament against each other. Hall 4 took on derby rival Hall 5, but it turned out lopsided.

Our opponents looked uneasy in the game and lacking in training, and our rejuvenated captain bulldozed through four players to score the first try.

Our find of the season, former Saint Andrew’s player Weiqiang, took advantage of Hall 5’s misunderstanding of the sport and sneaked in for an easy try, converting as well.

Another star player, Chunrong, then displayed his change of pace and cut through Hall 5’s defence. With his size and speed, he is the darkhorse to watch. Weiqiang converted this try too.

In the second half, Weiqiang once again exposed the opponents’ weaknesses with his intelligence, reaching the tryline in no time. Chunrong wrapped up the 31-0 mauling with another blistering run, which Weiqiang converted as well.

With that, Hall 4 matched up with group seed Hall 11 in the Winners’ Pool tie. Chunrong had left by now. The plan was to play steadily and conservatively, against a known formidable opponent. Unfortunately Praga, in his attempts to drag the team out of the deep end, got injured and left the pitch. Things went downhill from there.

A strong kicking game by Hall 11, and displaying better spirit over our intimidated lads, we lost by a good 38-0.

Hall 15 narrowly made it past Hall 5 after an initial scare, reducing our hopes considerably. In this playoff for the group runners-up position, it could be said that a lot was put on the shoulders of Weiqiang and Desmond to lead the team.

Alas, it was not enough. Hall 4 evidently panicked, conceded a try almost right from kick-off, and had no defence. Hall 15 ran away clear 26-0 winners

TOTs Garang Guni Collection

TOTs (Touch of the Hearts) will be holding its annual garang guni collection drive this Sunday! Details are as follows:-

In a bid to raise funds for its beneficiary, this collection drive is one of the many efforts TOTs will be organising throughout the year. Its beneficiary this year is MILK (Mainly I Love Kids) Fund, a charity organisation which reaches out to disadvantaged children in the hope of developing them into contributing members of society. These children come from troubled or low-income families, suffer from chronic illnesses, physically challenged and often caught in a downward cycle that their circumstances destine them to (Excerpt from MILK website).

Defeated by Man and Nature

Football is a game played by 22 men. Usually the numbers are split equally; today you could almost say it was 10 against 12.

One of the most improved sports this Inter-Hall season for Hall 4, the soccer team has been knocked out in the quarterfinals by the talented Hall 12.

The team deserves much credit, undone only by another golden goal, after clawing back from two goals down.

Of course, we didn’t play with only 10 men. But you could almost say that. Not once but twice in the match, Hall 4 only had 10 players on the field against the opposition. First, when we kicked off without Jayden, who arrived late, then into extra-time, when Jevon was away due to a call of nature.

In his absence the 10 men could not hold back Hall 12’s onslaught, resulting in their captain unleashing a superb left-footed strike from just outside the box.

We were not looking forward to this match. Lying in wait was a strong team who won their group, including beating Hall 6. We had also tasted defeat against them in a friendly.

Captain James tinkered with the formation for a more conservative midfield, shifting Jayden to the wing and positioning centre-back Colin as anchorman. His instructions were also simple – to attack down the left, linking up Colin, Jayden and striker Zhongliang.

But as expected, after a nervy start for the favourites, they settled into the game and dominated proceedings. Hall 4 could only play with half chances.

Before the break Hall 12 was already 2-0 up, courtesy of a header off a cross and a goal resulting from miscommunication by our goalkeeper Vinson.

On the sidelines, both benches looked like they already knew the outcome of the match. However, the Hall 4 team had other ideas.

Just before the break, a typical punt up by Hall 4 put Zhongliang through, and for the third time this season, he finished off the through ball with a left-footed strike to keep us in the game.

That gave us the morale-boost and James tried his best to keep our heads up during the short rest.

It was a difficult second-half. While Hall 12 kept their shape, we were running all over chasing the game. It was a painful sight with many of our players unable to keep up with the opponents. Our lacklustre centre midfield, especially, was being eaten up by theirs.

Hopes for the semi-final were kept alive when Weisheng delivered another trademark long free kick which sailed over everyone into goal, whilst David distracted the opposing keeper.

The referee blew for the end of normal time. Jevon left for the toilet. When he returned, the match was over. In the short period played, Hall 12 delivered the sucker punch.

Did they have 12?

By the end of the match several senior players in the Hall 4 team were furious with the referee and his handling of matters. He was strict and hard-handed, but at times was OTT. He reprimanded players who made excessive noise during the game, and reiterated to leave the calls to him. But when it mattered, he could not make the right calls.

Hall 4 had come very far. The team held much promise with good performances during pre-season. Experience against some of the best hall teams in NTU proved we were up there with them. It might have been a dream to reach the semi-finals, but we fought and lost to a strong team today. I am sure we have earned the respect of many halls this year.

Manager Chunxiang and Yiyong summed up the effort of the team the best: “This was the sport that trained the hardest, with a fair turn-up every time.”

Graduating players Colin and Weisheng believe the team is left in good hands. “With the Year 1s, we have a very good squad and frankly with the players we have we can beat any team.”

Colin asked us to look forward to next year, that we can only get better. “By coming back from goal deficits (0-1 vs Hall 3, 0-1 vs Hall 5, 0-2 vs Hall 12) it already shows we have the fighting spirit.”

Lastly, Weisheng left golden advice for us: “You need to enjoy the game more when you’re on the field, even if it’s serious, then you’ll play better.”

IHG 08/09 – Track Heats

The SRC track was swamped with blue this morning, as Hall 4 is the convening hall for the Track Event this IHG. With all preparatory work being completed efficiently, the heats started promptly on schedule at 10am sharp.

In the 4×100 metres relay, the men’s team comprising of Jayden, Wei Siong, Qing Rong and James did just enough to qualify for the Track Finals next weekend, with a timing of 48.455s, coming in 4th in their heat, and 7th place overall. We will be joining Halls 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 12 and 14 in the Finals next weekend.

Elsewhere, the men’s team put in a valiant effort in the 4×400 metres event with a timing of 405.95s. The prowess of the other halls proved too great as we just missed the qualifying time of 355s by 50 seconds, finishing in 12th place overall. Nonetheless, congratulations to Raymond, Walter Song, Ian and Yi Yong for putting in their best effort.

Unfortunately, the ladies have also been knocked out of the competition from both the 4×100 metres and 4×400 metres events. Nonetheless, Hall 4 would like to thank the 4×100 metres team (Wei Yun, Lu Bin, Shaline and Jessica) and the 4×400 metres team (Julia, Xue Ping, Hazel and Jessica) for their efforts.

IHRG Update – Chinese Chess

JANUARY 7 2009

The Hall 4 Chinese Chess Team, finalists at last year’s Inter-Hall Recreation Games Tournament, will not be seeded in next year’s tournament. This follows a dismal showing in the hall’s best shot to win a medal in the recreational games tournament, as Chinese Chess is indeed its strongest segment.

While the team managed to win 3 halls, it drew 2 games and lost against 2 other halls, thereby only managing to win a quarter-finals placing but not the semi-finals.

However, all is not lost as this year’s team is predominantly made up of junior players, who will definitely display marked improvement following more intense training over the next year. We will certainly be back much stronger next year!

What An Exhilarating Game!

The HALL IV Hockey Girls Team emerged victorious against Hall 12 to progress into the semi-finals this IHG tournament. This follows a tight match where we edged out our opponents 2-0 on penalties after the game ended 0-0 after normal time.

The fervent team of supporters were understandably jubilant after the victory, as this is the first time Hall IV progresses into the semi-finals this IHG season. Indeed, the quarter-final “jinx” that seemed to have befallen upon Hall IV following knock-outs in badminton, sepak takraw, table tennis and volleyball girls was lifted. Hopefully, this is a sign for better things to come in our future matches.

Furthermore, the victory definitely came against the odds, as our players looked relatively unprepared prior to the match kickoff. Even at the eleventh hour, the team was scrambling to find enough players to fill the team, and had to use inexperienced players such as Ai Jia and Angeline Tang to fill up the numbers.

As the game started, team manager Yi Yong stepped up to the mettle and was precise in his tactical instructions to the team, proving instrumental in procuring a tight defence for Hall IV, as the Hall 12 players bombarded our goal with waves of attacks.

Lubin, easily the Player of the Match, contributed to the impregnable fortress that is the Hall 4 goal, as the goalkeeper for the team. Blocking shots after shots, the Hall 12 team became visibly frustrated with their missed chances. This was especially so when one of their shots at goal was judged to be cleared off the line, muting celebrations on their end.

As the players were unable to find the net at both ends of the court by the end of normal time, the match proceeded into penalties. Even then, Lubin managed to maintain her composure to block both shots from the Hall 12 penalty takers, as our players scored their penalties against Hall 12 to secure a place in the semi-finals.

The team will next meet Hall 16 on 21 January 2009 (Wednesday), from 2030 to 2100hrs at the NIE Hockey Pitch.

A Close Fight

Hall 4 squared off against Hall 5 in the third round of Group C soccer this morning at the SRC field.

A lot was at stake for the two teams given that this is the last game to be played in the preliminary stages. Win, and progress into the Quarter-Finals of the competition where a match against Hall 12 awaits. Lose, and be knocked out of the tournament.

In the first match of the season, Hall 4 managed to edge out Hall 5 with a 1-0 victory. So it comes as no surprise that Hall 5 was both seeking a restoration to their pride as well as a chance to progress further into the competition.

About 20 minutes into the first half, Hall IV scored its first goal, of which Hall IV held on to the tender lead into the break. Unfortunately, Hall 5 managed to equalise in the 60th minute due to some frenzy defending by our player.

The tide of the game then lobbed back and forth, and there did not seem to be a clear winner. Indeed, after 90 minutes, the game ended 2-2, and entered the penalty competition.

With this sudden death round, it was make or break for Hall IV players, who scored 5 goals. On the contrary, due to a good save, Hall 5 only managed 4 goals.

The triumph certainly did not come easily, and we will enter the quarter finals, facing off with Hall 12.

You Win Some, You Lose Some

They say you only shed tears for the greatest disappointments.

On a day when the tide turned against a champion, we also saw anger, frustration and disbelief.

A fairytale has fallen. Defending champions of Inter-Hall Games Badminton, Hall 4, succumbed to Hall 10 in a surprise exit. The winners advanced to the last four of this year’s tournament.

To retain the gold was already seen as a mighty feat this year, due to the exodus of key players. But the end came at a stage earlier than expected.

Last year’s captain Alex, veteran players Damien, Shuying and Vicki have graduated; top female player Lisi is no longer in the hall. Although our guys are still considered a force, the team lacked enough girls of quality.

Even though Hall 10 may not be as strong as some of the other quarter finalists, captain Edwin did not want to sound complacent before the tie either.

“This year the quality is well spread out across the halls. We have a fight on our hands today.”

Our electrifying male singles, Paul, breezed through his match, as expected, though it was after a minor hiccup in the first set as his energetic opponent made him sweat. Once the Hall 10 player ran out of gas, it was Paul all the way.

The expected good start was followed by a much-anticipated and exciting match, as our top girl Shihui clashed with theirs. Both halls did not change strategy and kept faith with their top female singles. Shihui pushed the Hall 10 girl quite a bit, but as she was better polished and more aggressive, the match went Hall 10’s way.

Then came the decisive point.

Our hall was banking on taking the three male points as our girls were weaker. This meant Paul, doubles pair Johnson and Edwin, and mixed doubles Zhiye and Shaline had to win. But before the last point, which was a sure win, could be played, the tie was over.

Our male doubles put in an uncharacteristic display, often guilty of overdoing it, with the intention to kill the opponents early. The Hall 10 pair was calm and eventually our guys made many unforced errors. When they lost the first set, the supporters went into hyperventilation.

It was almost the same story in the second and it was bye-bye 2008 for us.

Although we were still only 2-1 down, the next point, the female doubles, was a no-brainer. Qiyun and Sharmin bravely took on the pair from Hall 10 but it was a case of different class.

The score read 1-3. Zhiye and Shaline did not even hit a shuttlecock and it was over.

Earlier in the day, there was better news.

Our water polo team defeated Hall 7 against the odds to reach the quarterfinals as runners-up in the group. It was a nail-biting finish as Hall 4 held out for a 3-2 victory.

The team of Andy, Mark Chew, Mark Teo, James, Hsi En, Gary, Chunrong, Kelvin and Walter took to the pool against an expectedly stronger opponent.

Our star player Andy was like a beacon to the players, as they looked to him for almost everything.

And he justified it all.

Andy was dangerous every time he received the ball in attack, as opponents would swamp him in twos or threes. Two beautiful shots, plus an incredible assist for Mark Teo out of nothing, gave the hall the three goals.

Hall 4 held out as the clock ran down with goalkeeper Gary making many crucial saves in the dying seconds. As the umpire counted down the game’s last minute, Hall 7 pelted our goal endlessly, but to no avail.

Marked Improvement Despite Dismal Showing

It was another electrifying day of IHRG action at the Hall 8 Multi-Purpose Court. This time, it was the word game BOGGLE being the order of the day.

It came as no surprise that HALL IV was unseeded for the BOGGLE competition, given that the hall has traditionally not been strong in word games. In fact, as team player Vanessa (who featured last year as well) mentioned, HALL IV only managed to win one out of 35 sets in the previous year’s competition.

In the end, the HALL IV team of Charlene (team manager), myself (team captain), Huishan, Vanessa, Ming Shi, Alex and Ye Wee failed to buck the trend this year, having lost all seven of its games. However, there is a silver lining for consolation.

We managed to display marked improvement indeed – taking eight out of 35 sets this time round (I won 3 sets, Alex won 2, while Huishan, Vanessa and Ye Wee won 1 set each). It was a really close fight for us against Hall 8 too, where we took the game to the mire, going down two sets to three. The spread was even positive in our favour despite the loss!

All sixteen halls were separated into two groups of eight halls each. Each hall has to play against seven other halls over the course of the day’s competition, to determine the halls which would advance into the semi-finals. Each game consists of five sets each.

Personal Note: Charlene and I, the team manager and captain of the HALL IV Boggle team, would like to thank all our players for sacrificing their time during these holidays for the training sessions and the game itself. For spending much last-minute effort trying to cram as many three-letter words as possible. For displaying undying spirit and vigour throughout despite the odds being stacked against us. Thank you! Also, thanks to Jian Li and Xi Wen for all the help and support you’ve provided throughout the months!

We will (try to) be back a stronger team next year.

What An Unfortunate Day At The Games…

On Dec 30^th, Hall 4 was involved in a series of IHG, namely women’s hockey, soccer and table tennis.

For the women’s hockey, Hall 4 came up against Hall 6 which was the strong favourite to take the match. Just barely into the match, Hall 6 threatened to score when they managed to breach through our defences, luckily our goalkeeper Lu Bin, was composed enough to made a good save. Spurred on by their raucous supporters, Hall 6 began wave after wave of attack, but the make-shift team from Hall 4 managed to hold on despite the onslaught. This included a late scare when Hall 6 was awarded a penalty corner, luckily it was cleared to safety. Karen in particular was the star of our team and even had a goal disallowed when she strike the ball outside the D ring. The tension and excitement were prolonged as the match ended in a goalless draw, with penalties coming up next. Both sides were awarded 3 penalties.

Karen was our first penalty taker; however she sent the ball just wide of the goalmouth. Next was Hall 6 turn to shoot, they too sent the ball wide. Next up, is Hazel. However her effort was also just wide of the mark. It was Hall 6 turn again; Lu Bin came to our rescue again by saving the penalty and forcing both sides to the decisive third penalty. Li Jing, our final penalty taker also sent her target just wide of the mark. Finally Hall 6 managed to convert the last penalty and won the match. In the end, we lost due to experience; however the girls performed well beyond expectations despite the odds.  Final Score Hall 6 (1:0) Hall 4

                  Meanwhile in the SRC stadium, our guys were up against Hall 3 in the game of soccer.  Both sides went into the match looking for a win as the winner would top the group and become top seed. This would be beneficial as the top seed will then play against the second seed from the other groups. Both sides were relatively evenly matched, with most of the action taking place in the midfield. Jevon was the defensive rock of the team, as he helped to clear many imminent dangers. Meanwhile on the other half, Jayden was the team’s playmaker as he tried to exploit every opportunity to feed our lone striker, Zhongliang. However, Hall 3 went one up, after some intelligent build up play on the left, which led to a pinpoint cross followed by a marvellous half volley which sailed beyond the arms of our custodian, Vinson, into the net. We then ended the first half trailing one goal down to Hall 3.

The 2^nd half, we began to attack with more fervour and eventually allowing us to grab a dramatic equaliser.  It happened when Hall 4 was awarded a free kick at the edge of the throw-in line. Our free kick specialist, Wei Sheng stepped up and curled the ball into the top corner of the net, silencing everyone. Hall 3 was left shell shocked and dumbfounded as they could not believe their eyes. Spurred on by the equaliser, Hall 4 began to play with more passion. We almost grabbed a dramatic victory when Daniel, our late substitute ghosted past 2 defenders, however his shot was well saved by the keeper. Hall 3 was on the verge of self imploding as tempers threatened to boil over. The match eventually ended in a 1-1 draw. Just when everyone thought that that match would be decided by penalties, Hall 3 scored against the run of the play in the dying moments of the 2^nd half of extra time, leaving us needing a win against Hall 5 in order to qualify to the next phase of the tournament. Final Score:  Hall 3 (2:1) Hall 4

                  Moving on to the last part of the segment for today, is the table tennis event which see our hall pitting against hall 9 in the quarterfinals.  There was some reshuffling in the ranks as our Indian doubles flew back to India. They were replaced by Zhou Ke and Lin Sujin. Jevon was the team new addition with him playing the men’s single.

                  The final aggregate is as follows: Hall 9 (4:1) Hall 4. Despite the team’s valiant effort, they were outplayed by their opponents from hall 9, except for Louisa who overwhelmed her opponent for all 3 sets. We were unlucky to lose in our doubles matches, nevertheless the team from hall 4 is sure to mount a serious title challenge in the next IHG. Well done Ohmers!!!
