IHG Update – Soccer (v Hall 5)

December 28, 2008

DECEMBER 27 2008
- Qinwei

Team Hall 4 soccer team scored an early victory in the competition, beating local rivals Hall 5 1-0.

With the game scheduled in the afternoon, the team had to battle the blistering sun in the opening game.

Hall 5 had the first chance of the game with its left winger skipping past two players, carrying the ball into the penalty box. However, the finishing touch was poor and the ball was easily collected by the goalkeeper. Gradually, Team Hall 4 were in control of the game, and attacking midfielder Jayden, saw the ball crashed off the woodwork with a cracking effort from outside the box. Then, Hall 4’s striker, Zhong Leong, gave the team a well deserved lead. Collecting a through pass from midfield, he shrugged off a defender and sent the ball into the bottom corner with a left foot finish, leaving the goalkeeper no chance. Hall 5 fought back in search of an equalizer, but lacked the finishing touches in the penalty area. Team Hall 4 held on to go 1-nil up into the second half.

With the opponent looking for an equalizer, Team Hall 4 was held back for prolonged period. Despite being under pressure, Team Hall 4 still managed to get the ball up front and Jayden sent in another shot from 25 yards out that flew past the wrong side of the upright. The game soon changed into a tussle for ball in the midfield and clear chances were far and few between. Eventually, Team Hall 4 grind out the victory it wanted, finishing 1-0.

IHG Update: Basketball(M) – Grp B (Hall 4 v Hall 13)

December 13, 2008

Date: 12 December 2008
Time: 1630hrs
Venue: NIE Indoor Basketball Court

With a dominating first half, Hall4 basketball team edged out the Hall13 team with a 5 points margin. In the first two quarters, despite not having advantage on average height, the Hall4 team played a much more physical game and keeping the Hall13 team pressed throughout the period.

The tough defense limited Hall13 team to only 6 points in the first half. In the 3rd quarter, the defense of Hall4 team went a bit unorganized missing rotation and leaving a lot space for Hall13’s sharp 3pt shooters. They hit quite a few 3 pointers and closed up the score to within 10 points. In the fourth quarter, the Hall4 team held steady with a few steals and smooth fast breaks.

The score board remained at 34-29 with Hall IV emerging victorious!

Good job to our Hall IV players!

IHG Update – Badminton (Hall 4 v Hall 12)

December 12, 2008

The morning dew dripped on my arms as I walked pass the trees on the way to the SRC. On this peaceful morning, NTU was awakened by the roar of the crowd. Today – 11 December 2008 – marks yet another round of fierce battle in the IHG badminton tournament. The screeching sounds of athletes as the soles of their sports shoes rub against the tarmac of the badminton court, with the smashing sounds of shuttlecocks intensified the atmosphere. Game On, Hall 12.

Hall IV sent her first athlete for her first game against Hall 12 – the female singles game. High hopes were pinned on the veteran player, Shi Hui, who trashed her opponents in the preliminary round. She did not disappoint the crowd this time round, sealing the game over two sets, 21-4 and 21-6 without flinching. Her victory boosted confidence for the next match.

The 2nd round was the highly anticipated men’s doubles. Our very own home boys Johnson and Edwin marched out to receive the challenge. This time, the opposition team player gave our guys a hard time trying to test their agility, by smashing into corners of the court. But this only gave our players a chance to perform how good their agility was.  It was a very good show of sportsmanship between the two halls and they showed respect for each other skills through a good game. A tough fight had to end. Hall 4 bagged the game, 21-18, 21-18.

In the 3rd match for the mixed doubles, Hall IV seemed to have run out of lady luck. The opponents managed to tip over a couple of drop shots and a couple of aces, playing in class and style and winning our representatives Lu Bing and Chee Yong.

Shaline and Beifen took the court in the final battle of the day – the women’s doubles. They lost the first set 13-21, and our hopes seemed to have been diminished when Beifen sprained her ankle during the end of the first round. But, our girls showed the true wit and perseverance characteristic of Hall IV, by attacking the opponent’s weak points by delivering sly drop shots to the opponent, who could not cope with our changing tactics between smashes and drop shots. We managed to win the last set in a tough fight, 13-21, 21-7 and 21-19.

With this, the Badminton Team from Hall IV are through to the quarter-finals, which will be held on 2nd January 2009 from 3pm to 6pm. Do join us there to show your support to our competitors!

Hall 4 vs Hall 14

Under the afternoon blazing sun, Hall IV and Hall 14 clashed at the SRC tennis court.

Unfortunately, Hall IV lost to Hall 14 in the end, after two hours of intense competition, having lost the crucial mixed doubles round in a nailbiting 7-5 finish.

The final scorelines were:

  • Men’s Doubles: Hall IV 1, Hall XIV 6
  • Women’s Doubles: Hall IV 6, Hall XIV 1

IHG Updates – Sepak Takraw

December 11, 2008

In some ways, any match between Hall 4 and Hall 1 could be considered a derby match considering our close proximity of our halls. And our highly dedicated players were determined to do our hall proud in the annual inter- hall games 2008 – even having a last training session in the punishing sun prior to the actual match itself. Unlike previous IHGs, there was a surprising good turnout for this group A match. Kudos to Hong Ming for turning up to support the team, even if it meant hobbling across the track to support Team Hall 4. The match was fast and furious, with both sides keen on winning the match. Despite the relatively large winning margin, it was a rather even match with Hall 4 winning the first set 21-8, followed by a nail- biting 23-21 and finally sweeping whatever resistance Hall 1 had to offer in the final set 21-9. Well done Hall 4!

IHG Updates – Netball

December 10, 2008

It was a bright and sunny Tuesday. What a great start to the eagerly anticipated annual Inter-Hall games!

There was a sea of colours at the multi-purpose courts where the netball competition was held. This time round, it was the traditional battle of red against blue, with Hall 9 in their usual maroon jerseys and Hall 4 in their familiar blue jerseys.

Breathtaking is the word to describe this closely contested match. It went right down to the wire where a “stepping” violation call by the referee determined the outcome of the match.

In the first quarter, both teams started off shakily. Hall 9 was superior in their goal attack, while Hall 4 dominated in centre court. Amanda and Peishan clearly outran and outplayed their maroon opponents. The score at the end of the first quarter was 5-5.

The next quarter, Hall 9 began to pull away with many offensive rebounds and put-backs. Hall 4 wasted too many clear chances due to inexperience. The second ended in a score of 12-8 in favour of Hall 9.

Both sides continued to battle it out in the third quarter. Defensive work was well carried out and both sides only scored a few points. Jessica fought hard in defence, ending the third with Hall 9 leading 15-10.

It looked like a lost cause for the Hall 4 girls. However, unwilling to admit defeat, the girls in blue gave their all in the last quarter. Lubin and Liyen, being the attack force of Hall 4, suddenly came alive and started scoring with precision and speed. The crowd went ecstatic with intense cheering and encouragements. The score was tied at 16-16 with a few minutes remaining. However, a few errors resulted in Hall 9 getting possession and converting to lead Hall 4 with a score of 19-16. When it looked like it was over, the Hall 4 girls surprised everyone and gave Hall 9 a scare with their never-say-die attitude. They counter-attacked and pulled the score back to 19-18 and had the last possession of the game. In a center-court scramble, they managed to pass the ball to Lubin. Lubin converted the last shot of the day and the Hall 4 crowd went screaming. However, the referee disallowed the last point due to an earlier stepping violation and broke the hearts of the girls. Hall 9 claimed victory with the tiniest of margin.

Nonetheless, the Hall 4 girls were applauded for their undying efforts. All the best in the next game!

The 22nd JCRC Photo-Shoot. Selects.

October 31, 2008

A few preview pictures of the 22nd JCRC Photo-Shoot, which occurred on the Friday evening of October 10th, at one of the myriad ADM studios, with Sam – Silver’s friend and a third-year ADM student (i think) – the chief photographer of the day.

The following are some appetizers to whet your palate. Old school retro being the theme of the day, we were too busy fooling around in our costumes, as well as our thick and rather outlandish make-up. It was a night of fun, nary a moment of boredom in between waiting for our turn of the shoots as we entertained ourselves with, you guessed it, impromptu shots.

And we had cameras on hand to capture this action.

The main course will be up on the Hall IV website as well as the JCRC notice-board soon enough. So keep your eyes peeled for that!

Exam Supper

October 28, 2008

The torrential downpour and the impending examinations failed to dampen the spirits of NTU HALL OF RESIDENCE IV residents as the exam supper came to a resounding success.

On the evening of Thursday, 23rd October 2008, loud music blared from the sound system set up at the stage in front of the canteen and the whiff of good food filled the podium air.

Due to the torrential downpour (and really, it was raining cats and dogs!), we had to downsize the event by shifting our food booths into the podium, as well as the makeshift stage in front of the canteen; this, in spite of our original plans to have the stage on the grass patch in front of the block 26 TV room.

Granted that things were a little messy at first due to the huge crowd within the confined space we had, things kicked into gear soon enough. Stomachs were kept happy with free donuts from the Donut Factory, as well as free puffs from Polar Puffs & Cakes, established outlets, and renowned in their own right.

In addition, TOTs had also set up a booth to sell ice-cream at $1 per scoop in a bid to raise funds, while the JCRC had another booth of their own, selling old Hall IV t-shirts and sub-committee t-shirts at very low prices.

Also, there were two hours worth of performances for our residents, by performers such as our very own Jam Band – Brown Shoe Electric, Carol (who brought us a solo of Stefanie Sun’s “Ren Xing”, which climaxed with a mock proposal by Zun Chen on the egging of the crowd!), Zhong Leong & Ling Qin (who brought the night to an electrifying atmosphere with a resounding version of A*Mei & Jam Hsiao’s “Yi Yan Shun Jian”), amongst many others.

We would like to thank all residents of Hall IV for your support in this event.

I, on the behalf of my 22nd JCRC, would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone all the best for the upcoming examinations!

Signing Off,
Walter
Your Publications Secretary

Hall Fellow Dinner @ Nova/Taser

October 20, 2008

It was a night of get-togethers for the year ones from Orientation Groups of NOVA and TASER from OMC 2008 at the second Hall Fellow Dinner (the first one featured Orientation Groups MIDAS and EDEN).

Despite the onset of the impending examinations and the onslaught of projects, there was a rather fine turnout at the event that evening.

The OGs themselves could mingle amongst each other (re-bond? HAHA. fine, not funny), and there was laughter aplenty to fill the night. In addition, there was much meaningful interactions with our hall fellows who had come down to enjoy the meal of KFC and Pizza Hut and to mix around with our Hall Residents.

The following shots capture the fine moments of the evening:
