A Good Field Day for Hall IV!

December 22, 2008

Saturday was a good field day for Team Hall 4, as the female volleyball and male softball team won against their respective opponents. The ladies beat local rivals Hall 5 two sets to one, while the men edged out Hall 14 with a score line of 12-7.

With quarterfinals berth at stake, the teams battled long and hard. After losing to Team Hall 4 in the opening round, Hall 5 ladies were seeking revenge. Facing a determined opponent, Team Hall 4 displayed great composure to win the first set 25-10. Not to be outdone and to get back into the game, Hall 5 fought back in the second set. Hall 5 dealt out some powerful serves, leaving Team Hall 4 with little chances and eventually prevailed, winning the set 25-15. The third was a close fight between the two and the teams rarely separated by more than two points. At 24-23, Team Hall 4 seeks to finish the game off, but Hall 5 managed to tie the game 24-24. Team Hall 4 constantly pulled in front, but fails to finish the game on multiple occasions. Ultimately, the ladies showed nerves of steel to end it 32-30, after Hall 5’s return ball went wide. It was a great all round performance by the team to secure a place in the next round.

Similarly for the men, much is also at stake. A loss would have meant the end of the road in the competition for the team. It will turns out to be an epic battle that stretched over four innings and two tie breakers, and lasted more than two hours. After losing the toss, the team batted first in the opening inning. They didn’t have the best of starts, scoring zero runs, and the opposition scored two. Following a poor start, Team Hall 4 found their batting form and score three runs in the second inning to take the lead. But Hall 14 answered back to take back the lead. The score would continue to be see-sawed between the two sides before it came down to the second tie breaker with the score leveled at 6 all. Team Hall 4 started the tie break by scoring a run, before two superb bats by the players allowed the team to score runs in quick succession. At the changeover, Hall 4 led by 11-6. The pressure is now on the opponent to match the number of runs. Fantastic pitching by Team Hall 4 pitcher, David, struck out the opposing player, to leave them with two outs. More good pitching, forced them to bat the ball. Eventually a fly-ball catch by third baseman James, ended any hopes of a fight back and sent the Hall 4 supporters on the sidelines wild. Following the win, the team now look forward to the game against Hall 8 with quarterfinal place in sight.

IHG Update – Softball LP (Hall 4 v Hall 8)

December 20, 2008

DECEMBER 19 2008
- QINWEI

After suffering a defeat in its opening round, Hall 4’s young female softball team looked to pick themselves up and obtain a good result. As anything less than a win will mean the end of the road for the team, the team was in determined mood going into the game. Even a passing shower before the game failed to dampen the spirit of the team.

The game started off well for Team Hall 4, holding the more superior Hall 8 run-less on the first inning. Team Hall 4’s pitcher, Lubin, was in scintillating form as she dealt out strikes to the opponent in succession with some accurate pitching. However, Hall 8 answered back by holding Team Hall 4 to zero as well.

In the second inning, Team Hall 4’s relative inexperience crept into the game. Two mistakes allowed Hall 8 to score 2 runs, and the team failed to capitalise again on its batting turn. A good swing by Hall 8’s batter sent home three more players, pushing the scoreline to 5-0. Coupled with Team Hall 4 zero run, the pressure was on to hold Hall 8 and to start scoring on the fourth inning. In the end, Hall 8’s experience and better skills showed and nailed three more runs to put the results beyond the reach of Hall 4. The game ended 8-0 to Hall 8.

Albeit having scoring no runs, the ladies from Hall 4 exited the competition with their heads high. With many of the players having no prior experience in the game, the team dished out some commendable plays and displayed strong team spirit during the games. All is not lost as the team can look to build on this year’s experience and fight on in next year’s competition.

IHG Update – Softball/M (Hall 4 v Hall 2)

December 17, 2008

- MARK TEO

This is Hall 4’s first softball match for the guys this IHG season. Our players set off to the field for warm-up full of eagerness and vigour. We started off with the basic throws and catches and then got onto batting to get a feel of the game.

Soon, the match started and Hall 4 was off to a relatively good start. We held hall 2 down in the first inning, not letting in any runs as Jevon made some good catches to keep them at bay. When it was our turn to bat, Hall 2 managed to hold us down as well with a much more experienced looking team.

In the second inning, however, we conceded the maximum amount of runs as our fielders looked edgy. Miscommunication and lack of experience was what had let us down after a bright start. When it was our turn to bat again, we were once again held down by hall 2. It was already difficult to judge and hit the ball because their pitcher was on form today and It did not help when the supporters and players kept taunting us non-stop.

In the final inning, we let in a total of 6 runs. Once again, our inexperience showed when we threw the ball at the opponent instead of throwing it to the base. This caused confusion amongst ourselves and allowed them to score a few more runs. Although the final score was 13-0, this was a good learning experience that we can tap into and surely the next time we play, Hall 4 will definitely emerge victorious. Hit, Score Hall 4!
